Two Federal Courts, in Abuja and Port Harcourt gave conflicting injunctions to stop and to give a nod to the planned national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party.
On Monday, Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court Abuja pronounced that the convention slated for Thursday in Port Harcourt should not go ahead until Ali Modu Sheriif led faction of the party is recognized and identified with it.
The same day a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt Rivers State gave a nod to the Ahmed Makarfi led faction to proceed with the convention.
As it stands, the Chairman of the convention, the Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike had put machinery in motion to ensure that the convention is held as scheduled as he invited the Independent National Electoral Commission to monitor it.
On the other hand, Modu Sheriff said that he was not aware of the planned convention despite the peace agreement reached with the party Board of Trustees’ Reconciliation Panel.
Led by Professor Jerry Gana, the panel had directed both Makarfi and Sheriff to be in charge of the convention, even though it has recognized Modu Sheriff as the chairman, it has not reduced the power of Makarfi.
Sheriff had called for the suspension of the convention but the panel declined, adding that the planning committee could not just stop abruptly after spending huge fund to put things in place.
Some of the contending issues include the zoning formula, which the factions disagreed with. The party had zone the position of national chairmanship to the Southwest, which to Sheriff should not be.
In Southwest, there are also contending issues among the political gladiators on whom should be the PDP national chairman between Bode George and Jimi Agbaje.
Agbaje was a former PDP gubernatorial candidate in Lagos while Bode George was one time Deputy National Chairman of the party for South west.
