A 16-year-Cotonou girl, Kemi Leole working as housemaid in Lagos Nigeria nearly killed herself due to her mistress brutality.
She swallowed insecticide to commit suicide so that she could end the regular corporal punishment she had been receiving from her boss who lives on No. 8 Soji Adepegba Street, Off Allen Avenue Ikeja Lagos.
Leole’s boss, one Alhaja Fatima Williams had asked her relative, Yusuf Waliu to beat the housemaid for not cleaning a part of the house.
In his usual brutal manner, Waliu brought out a hot pressing iron and horsewhip to deal with the housemaid. She was beaten to the state of unconsciousness and later crawled to the kitchen to swallow poison.
She was thrown out of the house but sympathizers and neighbours who met her on the road reported the case to the police, leading to the arrest of the culprits.
Parading the boss and the chief suspect, Waliu at the State Police Command on Monday, the state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni said that the two would be prosecuted.
However, Alhaja Wiliams said that she never laid hands on Leole but directed Waliu to punish her for refusing to clean the house.
She said that nobody used pressing iron to burn the housemaid but that she sent the girl packing because she wanted to commit suicide.
But in his defense, Waliu confessed that he used the iron just to scare the housemaid from drinking insecticide but unfortunately the hot iron touched her skin.
