The governor of Edo State, governor Adams
Oshiomhole during an interaction with state house correspondents, stated
that he wouldn’t be leaving a huge liability for whoever succeeds him
as governor which is what the opposition are saying.
He stated that during his administration, he has
only four years outstanding of pensions after paying 13 years of
outstanding pensions.
This came after members of the opposition party,
the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alleged that the amount of money owed
to pensioners might cripple the incoming administration.
Oshiomhole stated that the state had 13 years of
outstanding pensions before he took over in 2008 which included gratuity
and pension for over 7,000 workers who were dismissed by the PDP
government.
He stated that when he came into power and saw all
the arrears he could have ignored them but being a labour leader prior
to assuming power in Edo State, he had to sympathize with the plight of
the workers and paid them.
To date, Oshiomhole said that he had paid 10 years out of the
outstanding arrears and he would still pay part of the remaining before
the new administration comes into power.
